Tennis in the United States is played on three kinds of places: public park courts run by a city or county, member clubs and country clubs with their own pros and leagues, and commercial tennis centers that sell court time by the hour. Public courts are usually free and first come, first served, with a posted limit (often 60-90 minutes when others are waiting); busier cities run online reservation systems with a small fee and a permit for the season. Indoor courts are rented by the hour and booked days ahead in winter. Most facilities are hard courts; clay is common in the Southeast and at private clubs, and grass is rare. Lights extend play into the evening at many parks, sometimes with a coin or app-operated switch.

New York is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in New York peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Really wonderful place to take lessons and to learn how to play tennis. The staff are exceptionally helpful and kind, particularly Dimitri and Lily. I became a member as a result and go 2-3 times a week.

Great facility and location, though the ceiling is a bit low. The instructors are skilled, though styles vary—some are excellent, others just focus on yelling or emotional support. The open play vibe, however, is a letdown. As an advanced beginner, I have zero interest in leveling up to join the current intermediate group—some of them are way too serious and cliquey. It’s frustrating that staff won't coordinate when numbers are low; seeing intermediate players forced into beginner sessions with a bad attitude is just absurd. If they don't want to be there, why show up? Overall, it’s a perfect spot for weekday clinics, but the social dynamics during open play need serious work.

Five stars for the facility, the coaching, and the programming!! Two stars for the front desk as of late. It used to be that the desk staff was friendly, helpful, good at recognizing the regulars, etc. The newer desk people are tough to deal with. They constantly act like they’re doing you a favor rather than being customer-service focused.

Good place to start to learn but one coach, Nicky, was difficult to work with. Her manner was borderline patronizing, at one point correcting me pointedly because I tried to make use of a ball tube to pick up balls that weren’t the right size. I have a double hip replacement so my instincts are to use whatever implements are available to me to make things easier. She even chastised me for putting it back upside down. This was followed by questioning me on whether I was in the right class (I was promoted from the intro class to adult beginner). None of this was necessary, all of it was embarrassing. I’ll be back but will not take class with this coach unless nothing else is available. Addendum: Following my original two star assessment of Court 16, I received a response from management immediately. The measure of a business is its customer service and Court 16 deserves praise for its handling of customer complaints. Also to be commended are most of its coaches (Phil, Sophia) and staff who approach a beginner with skill but also patience and professionalism.

Just finished my first tennis class and I’m thrilled! Such a friendly, welcoming team and an amazing coach. The lesson was fun, dynamic, and well-structured. Will be back!!
